FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions

What to expect in your first few sessions?

The first three sessions are used as an assessment period to gain an understanding of what brought you to therapy and get a sense of who you are. I generally ask lots of questions initially which differs from the rest of the therapy process where you essentially control what we discuss.

In this initial phase, I psychologically formulate your case and then discuss with you what I believe would be the most appropriate treatment plan, which may be shorter or longer in duration depending on your needs.

These sessions are also essential in figuring out if there is a good fit between us. I might ask you what it has been like to speak to me and if it feels safe for you to explore the many facets of your mind freely. Am I someone with whom you can express your inner world of thoughts, fears and fantasies? I will also evaluate if you are ready to engage in therapy and if you are able to use it in a helpful way.

Additionally, I will assess if you have the will to open yourself to the therapeutic process. Despite the various gifts, one can gain from therapy, it is important to understand from the outset that therapy cannot infuse you with the will to change. Without your will to change the unhealthy parts of your life and the openness to explore all aspects of yourself, save your money and don’t start therapy.

How long do I need to be in therapy?

I offer two main types of therapy the shorter of which is a brief dynamic therapy which consists of approximately 13 sessions. In this process, I use a psychodynamic framework for my formulation and utilize techniques from many other modalities to achieve therapeutic goals (CBT, DBT, Narrative Therapy). I also offer a longer-term therapy which contains more in-depth work.

Are my sessions confidential?

Yes, one of the lovely things about the therapy is that everything you say in the space is private and confidential. The only exception to this is if I believe that you are in imminent harm to yourself or to others in which case confidentiality will have to be broken in order to ensure your safety or the safety of others.

How frequently do I need to come in for sessions?

After the assessment period, I will discuss your treatment plan which will consist of either once or twice a week therapy. I do not allow for less frequent plans such as once a fortnight etc., the reason being that such arrangements tend to be less effective and often undermine the therapy process.

Fee Structure

I charge R950.00 for a 50-minute session.

This applies to both individual or couples therapy.

Cancellations

My policy around cancellation is as follows: If the session is not cancelled at least 24 hours beforehand, then you are liable for the session.

Can sessions be paid through my medical aid?

Sessions must be paid after each session by card or cash. Thereafter, you will receive an invoice which you will be able to submit to your relevant medical aid for reimbursement. Many medical aids have a limit of sessions or may not cover the entire cost per session, so it’s important to be aware of your own medical aid policy if you planning to claim for sessions.
